Tor Books is very happy to reveal The Collapsing Empire, author John Scalzi’s next book, a space opera coming to bookshelves in 2017 and available for pre-order now.
Our universe is ruled by physics and faster than light travel is not possible—until the discovery of The Flow, an extra-dimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transport us to other worlds, other stars.
Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It’s a hedge against interstellar war—and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.
The Flow is eternal—but it is not static. Just as a river changes course, The Flow changes as well, cutting off worlds from the rest of humanity. When it’s discovered that The Flow is moving, possibly cutting off every human world from faster than light travel forever, three individuals—a scientist, a starship captain and the Empress of the Interdependency—are in a race against time to discover what, if anything, can be salvaged from an interstellar empire on the brink of collapse.
The Collapsing Empire features a cover by Sparth, the artist notable for defining the look of Microsoft’s Halo game series, among others.
Here’s a look at Sparth’s unobscured piece for the book:

Sounds like a cool enough premise, and Scalzi’s a generally appealing author. I’m in.
(and I have to admit, while this page was loading, I was thinking, “Please don’t be in the Old Man’s War universe, please don’t be in the Old Man’s War universe”… not because I dislike the universe, at all, but because there’s already been plenty of those books and I also like authors I write doing new things!)
Ooooh. Pretty. The cover gives me a Homeworld vibe. Though the tidal forces on those planets would be nasty.
Neat premise, too. Pity the marketing copy is trying to make it sound like a generic “save the world/galaxy” thriller.
I could not squee more.
Always good to see another Scalzi book coming out , so far I’ve liked all of his previous ones. The cover definitely has a certain “Homeworld” vibe to it, although it also reminds me a lot of some of the classic Asimov covers ( one of the “Currents of Space” paperbacks from the 70’s is springing to mind).
Sounds like a classic space opera set up, circa 60s/70s. Count me IN! Where’s the pre-order link?!
That cover is FANTASTIC, BTW.
Yay, this looks intersting. But preorder options – hmm, hardcover and Nook. Is Nook epub? Or at least calibre-compatible?
Cover art looks like something from John Harris, but I’m not certain.
My prayers to the Great Waffle-in-the-sky have been answered. Now I can start my new religion, with this answered prayer as proof, and look forward to my tax exempt status. HOORAH!
@Iustin Pop, Amazon has it for Kindle.
I don’t see the pre-order yet on Apple iBooks, but I’ll keep looking.
Amazon has it too if you search for it. costs more than B&N. hardcover and kindle
Iustin pop, yes, Nook is Epub.
It’s an Azimov ripoff. No thanks.
I’m 70 pages into reading the book. It has been a struggle compared to previous Scalzi books. I’m spending an inordinate amount time trying to make sense of it all especially the need for strange names, places, etc. I keep looking for anagrams. It tales a lot of effort to read.
