Mia Corvere, escaped slave and infamous assassin, is on the run…

We’re excited to share the cover of Darkdawn, the epic conclusion of the Nevernight Chronicle from author Jay Kristoff. Check out the full cover by artist Jason Chan below!

From author Jay Kristoff:

It’s always incredible to work with an artist as talented as Jason Chan, but this is easily my favorite of all his covers. We usually bounce around a few ideas in the planning stages, but with this one, he knew exactly where to take it and knocked it out of the park first draft. It’s pure badass.

Darkdawn publishes September 2019 with St. Martin’s Press. From the catalog copy:

The greatest games in Godsgrave’s history have ended with the most audacious murders in the history of the Itreyan Republic.

Mia Corvere, gladiatii, escaped slave and infamous assassin, is on the run. Pursued by Blades of the Red Church and soldiers of the Luminatii legion, she may never escape the City of Bridges and Bones alive. Her mentor Mercurio is now in the clutches of her enemies. Her own family wishes her dead. And her nemesis, Consul Julius Scaeva, stands but a breath from total dominance over the Republic.

But beneath the city, a dark secret awaits. Together with her lover Ashlinn, brother Jonnen and a mysterious benefactor returned from beyond the veil of death, she must undertake a perilous journey across the Republic, seeking the final answer to the riddle of her life. Truedark approaches. Night is falling on the Republic for perhaps the final time.

Can Mia survive in a world where even daylight must die?

I need Mia and Ash to survive and still be together. I hope I won’t have to deal with the “bury your gay” trope. I hope because I trust Kristoff. He’s heartless and I know that the characters will go through hell before the story is over but I can deal with all of that if Mia and Ash come out the other side, still very much a united front, ready to face whatever else the world throws at them.

The cover is simply gorgeous! I love everything about it…

@3 Rukmini

Good authors are willing to kill characters when the story calls for it.  Remember Tric?  He was the main character’s love interest, he had his own backstory and goals, and Kristoff murdered him in an instant.  This is definitely the kind of story where anyone can die.

Trusting Kristoff is almost as much of a mistake as hoping for a happy ending for someone.  I don’t think this is a kind of story where people get happy endings.

Kristoff’s author bio explicitly says that he doesn’t believe in happy endings, so that’s probably worth remembering. But we also have to remember that happy is probably long gone as a real possibility for Mia, but what @3 said isn’t, so I’m gonna hope as well.

Well in the opening three minutes of Nevernight, whoever is narrating explicitly tells us that Mia is dead now, but he/she/it are nervous about Mia murdering them anyway for writing some truths. We are also told the Empire is left in flames/ashes. It is also strongly suggested the narrator is not human. Wether Mia transcends her mortal form to become some kind of Shadow Creature like what happens to a character at the end of Book 2, who knows? So many possibilities. Like many others I LOVE the Mia/Ashlinn romance far more (9000x) than Mia/Tric. I’m just sad this seems like a 3 book only series. The whole revenge plot is great, but I’m WAY more fascinated with the wierd book and the shadow creatures and the night vs day stuff. So much great world building, I’d love another Triology following Mia collecting more Shadow beings and learning about other countries cultures etc. And of course her growing more and more powerful.

Needed a book to read during a flight so perused the airport newsagency shelves – speculative fiction.  Godsgrave book cover and back cover blurb spoke to me so even though it was book 2 I bought it.  Yes not having read book 1 was a barrier to full appreciation of this chronicle but my back of brain got it in the end.  The reading journey was intense and took me places I was always ready for.  Cleverly constructed storyline and an ongoing challenge to thinking you know what happens next.  An intelligent and full on adventure.  Patience for book 3.  Congratulations.  Conquer fear and find a demon.
