Hapless Morty and genius mad scientist Rick have traveled to parallel dimensions and other planets, but this might be their most incredible journey yet: They’re going into Dungeons & Dragons in a new comic book crossover miniseries from IDW Publishing and Oni Press. And who better to guide them on their campaign than inveterate D&D player and fantasy author Patrick Rothfuss?

In Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons, Morty makes the mistake of asking his grandfather for help mastering D&D in order to keep up with everyone at school obsessed with the role-playing game. Of course, Rick can’t just teach the game, they have to live it—and pretty soon the entire Smith family is rolling for their survival. Rothfuss, author of The Kingkiller Chronicle, will co-write the comic with Jim Zub, himself very experienced in writing D&D comics for IDW. Troy Little (Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) is drawing the art; check out the full cover, included in IGN’s official announcement, below:

“I love Rick and Morty with a powerful love, and I’ve played D&D since the 5th grade,” Rothfuss said in the press release from IDW. “So when they approached me about writing a story with both of them together? That’s some serious you-got-chocolate-in-my-peanut butter $#!& right there. I’m in. I’m all the way in. I’m gettin’ that chocolate all up in the peanut butter. Like, deep in. All the way in. It’s going to be sticky and delicious.”

Zub added, “The Dungeons & Dragons crew is letting Pat and I open a Pandora’s Box of insane adventure material and iconic creatures from the granddaddy of all tabletop role-playing games. I wish I could say we’ll take good care of it, but, the simple truth is, this is Rick and Morty we’re talking about. No fantasy world or otherworldly plane of existence is safe.” On a more serious note, he also tweeted his excitement at making this seemingly impossible project come together:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Pretty much all you can do. I liked Pat’s writing in Torment, at least.

Morty: Oh Gee Rick, how’re we gonna beat th’ Procrastikfuss?

Rick: ::belch:: We don’t have to beat him Morty.  We just have to escape this comic before the end, because it will never be finished.

Sheer curiosity, where are Dan and Justin on this? Isn’t R&M their original creation? I mean, I didn’t see any @’s towards them in this, or their names mentioned at all, unless I missed it (100% possible), so just wondering if anyone’s mentioned it to them. :)  Definitely looking forward to this!

Great… Just great… I hear they are writing new Scooby Doo comics, why don’t you try that next, since you aren’t writing anything else.

I’m a Rothfuss skeptic, but I’ll take this as a possibly positive (or at least not necessarily negative) piece of news. I have a hard time believing that Rothfuss would take on a large, time-consuming project while Book 3 is still in the wind, knowing that he’s already alienated some fans and potential readers already. I’m hoping this means Book 3 is about to be announced, or at least that this project will be short and minor in the scheme of his workflow.

Of course, I’ll also be sitting back with popcorn to watch the comments pile up here…but *I* will try to maintain hope!

I think Tyler Crittenden should be in on this too.

Also, *obligatory book 3 gripe*

I love Pat. He’s a great guy. This will be beautiful even if the Beholder gives the side eye.

Good lord, I feel bad for Rothfuss. He has the worst fan base. 😂 I love his stuff and can’t wait for the third book myself, but good lord! What a bunch of whiney ingrates.

@13 Mariana I assure you, there is plenty of room in my world for both gratitude and whining…:D

It’s hard not to feel a little bit jaded when you’ve been waiting so long for a book that was supposedly finished before the first of the trilogy was published. Realistically I just gave up on book 3 coming out, ever. Even if it did there is no way to resolve this story within the scope of one more book. At his current rate of writing and with at least an additional trilogy necessary to finish the story, I’m not worried about him dying before the story is finished, I’ll be dead before it’s finished. I’ve moved on and I don’t begrudge him whatever endeavors bring him joy. So long and thanks for all the fish Pat.

Glad to hear Pat is having his chocolate and peanut butter. As for book 3, I am sure we will get it when it’s done. If you’re a fan of his then you know there are countless fantasy books you could read, but very few are of of the same quality. Quality takes time. If you want badly written closure look up some fanfiction, perhaps even write some. Personally, I’m just going to sit back and wait to see who/what Skarpi is.

My apologies for comment 8 which violated the moderation policy. I’m not sure exactly how it did, having just reviewed said policy (and compared it to other comments here), but I’m gonna guess it is the unwritten policy on laziness. Hyperlinking a simple sentence to a video on procrastination is easily misconstrued and yes – Lazy.

To actually put my thoughts into words and explain what my point was I’ll just say that news of Patrick Rothfuss starting another quite random project without giving any kind of clues as to how far away the closer of his 1st trilogy is, is completely expected yet still eye rolling. The video I linked about procrastination just describes how the mind of a procrastinator is controlled by a force that says “I could do this project… but first I’ll just do this completely random quick thing instead, then first thing after that… well actually I also need to (insert random thought process No.2)…” and so on.

Many fans of Mr Rothfuss are annoyed by by the way he seems to be enjoying the rock-n-roll author’s life while not finding the time to finish the first part of the story he has begun to tell yet still finding time to run goat charities, write RnM DnD comics, arrange TV adaptions of his unfinished story, appear on author panels, write short stories, etc.

Pat is his own man and I’m sure book 3 will be an absolute joy whenever it finally comes out. If he wants to take a long time to do it then that is his choice, it is also the choice of his fans to feel frustrated and snark about the wait whenever a new diversion appears.

It’s kinda like waiting for Kingdom Hearts 3. You get the first two then a decade or two of random filler scattered throughout different formats and vague signs that the last piece is just around the corner…

I love Pat’s work.

What I would love even more is if anyone who harrassed him or complained about Book 3 would never be allowed to read it.

The man is not your dancing monkey. He doesn’t owe you anything. He gets to spend time with his kids whether you approve of not. He gets to work on other projects whether you think he should or not.

Stop whining, read another book, and for God’s sake, stop harrassing the man. He’s asked multiple times, and he shouldn’t have had to even ask once.
