Each month, the Tor.com eBook Club gives away a free sci-fi/fantasy ebook to club subscribers. We’re excited to announce that the second pick for August 2018 is THE BLACK COMPANY by Glen Cook, a landmark of grimdark fantasy, kicking off a trend that continues with Game of Thrones today.
Some feel the Lady, newly risen from centuries in thrall, stands between humankind and evil. Some feel she is evil itself. The hard-bitten men of the Black Company take their pay and do what they must, burying their doubts with their dead.
Until the prophesy: The White Rose has been reborn, somewhere, to embody good once more. There must be a way for the Black Company to find her….
So begins one of the greatest fantasy epics of our age—Glen Cook’s Chronicles of the Black Company.
THE BLACK COMPANY is available from August 27, 12:01 AM ET to August 30, 11:59 PM ET.
Download before 11:59 PM ET August 30, 2018.

So looking forward to new Company material, even if it is in a time period already covered. I wonder what the framing mechanism will be, time-period Croaker editing, or Shivetya-Croaker rewriting lost Annals, or discovering something Lady had wiped…
Wow thanks! I have one more book to read in the series I’m in now and then I was going to try out The Black Company next. Perfect timing.
Thanks Tor! Loading it on my Kindle!
I have read this series many times in paperback. Thanks for the free copy. It’s time I put it onto my Kindle and enjoy it all over again. Great news that there is a new addition to the saga. Way to go!!!
Love Cook’s writing, thanks for this!
Is there any news of another novel in Cook’s “Garrett P.I.” series coming anytime soon?
I am looking forward to reading this. I’m a huge fan of fantasy., from Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. This novel looks good.
Thanks Tor! I am really looking forward to reading this! :-D
It would be helpful if you could remember to state up-front that anybody outside US/Canada need not bother to apply…
