It’s been a few years in the making, but N. K. Jemisin has revealed her latest secret project! It’s for DC Comics and it looks incredible, so get ready… for Far Sector.

Part of Gerard Way’s revived Young Animal imprint for DC, Far Sector is a brand new Green Lantern story that focuses on a member who has been separated from the Green Lantern Corps: Sojourner “Jo” Mullein, who is the sole protector of City Enduring, a metropolis of 20 billion people.

It’s a job for only one Green Lantern because the city itself sees no murder, and very little violent crime… until now.

Far Sector is set to launch in late 2019, but Twitter gave us a teaser of sorts on what to expect, so check it out!

Here’s what Jemisin has to say about its inception:

And there you have it! For more information, head over to Entertainment Weekly‘s interview with N. K. Jemisin about the project.

(Reads the EW interview.) Hmm. Calling a Dyson swarm a “metropolis” is a stretch. Maybe if each worldlet is wall-to-wall urbanity, and they’re connected by stepping disc- or farcaster-style casual teleportation — that brings it closer to the idea of an “ecumenopolis”, a world-city like Trantor or Coruscant.

A single Lantern guarding 20 billion souls isn’t unusual. The Corps seems to have 3600 members for 3600 space sectors (“Thaal Sinestro, Lantern of Sector 1417”), which — depending on how much territory the self-proclaimed Guardians of the Universe profess to protect, the density of populated star systems, and the density within those system — might easily mean trillions of human-scale citizens per Lantern. Somewhere between Stargate’s “one hamlet per planet” and The Expanse. (Honestly, none of the possible numbers withstand close scrutiny, like a lot of DC wham! pow! sensawunda.) It’s just Earth that somehow gets multiple Lanterns patrolling concurrently.

I like Green Lantern and I like what I’ve read from Jemisin, so this is something I can look forward to.
