Everyone loves a tale of plucky underdogs contending against seemingly overwhelming odds. Take, for example, Tsukumizu’s Girls’ Last Tour (Shōjo Shūmatsu Ryokō), a manga serialized from 2014 to 2018 in Shinchosha’s Kurage Bunch online magazine and later collected in six volumes.
Sisters Chito and Yuuri were born into a world scoured by war, a ruined cityscape where humanity is rare and becoming rarer. Forced to flee their home, the youngsters spend their lives driving from one enigmatic location to the next on their beloved Kettenkrad1 , searching for food, necessary supplies, and answers.
The logical move might be to flee to some pristine wilderness, but it seems that before humans turned on each other, they Trantor-formed the Earth. It’s a totally Anthropocene Earth, where every accessible region has been transformed by human vision. While this is a grand achievement, the civilization responsible does not appear to have worried about what would happen if, one day, the machine stopped.
Lacking a fabled Arcadia to serve as a goal, Chito and Yuuri follow their grandfather’s advice to explore upward. The lower levels may have been picked clear by survivors living in the ruins, but the upper levels might prove more friendly.
Or, you know… perhaps not.
“Two prepubescent girls equipped with cut-down military gear attempt to delay their inevitable demise by scrounging amidst the ruins for the basic necessities of life” probably sounds like the sort of fiction sought out by parents worried that Old Yeller and The Red Balloon are far too upbeat2 . Yet somehow, although it is clear that Yuuri and Chito’s long-term prospects are dim, and that humanity is effectively extinct, Girls’ Last Tour somehow manages to be a curiously life-affirming, comforting series.

Girls’ Last Tour
In large part, this is thanks to its two inseparable leads, who don’t obsess on their obvious mortality. Chito is an insatiably curious bookworm, while her intellectually unburdened sister Yuuri focuses on more immediate pleasures like food. Aside from two strangers who vanish almost as soon as they appear, the sisters spend the entire series in solitude, but they do have each other. Their world may be horrible, but it is also full of wonders that the sisters take the time to savour.
The series is well served by its spare but effective art, which conveys the sense of a world plated over and then abandoned by its foolish creators.
Girls’ Last Tour is an instance of the genre the Japanese call “iyashikei”; episodic slice-of-life stories with little to no conventional dramatic conflict, stories with an overall soothing effect. A post-apocalyptic wasteland might seem like an odd choice for an iyashikei story (unless you’ve encountered Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō), but Girls’ Last Tour is proof that it not only can be done, but done well.

Does the manga make it clear that they’re sisters? The anime doesn’t mention it aside from them both talking about “grandfather” (who need not be actually related to either of them, given context).

I feel happy I knew what a Kettenkrad was already, from Charles Stross’ Laundry Files books.
We saw Red Balloon in school (and maybe church or camp) several times. Of course the thing about 16mm film, in the classroom, is there were a lot less films to choose from than there would be videotapes or dvd’s later on, so you tended to see things more than once…
By the way, if the rightsholders of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou are listening: I bought Girls’ Last Tour because of James’ reviews. I cannot currently buy YKK in English…
Why would any company name a dog food after Old Yeller? Did they not see it in first grade?
My tween just binge-watched the anime over a weekend. I saw most of it.
I infer, from some photos in one episode, that the theme–of the anime, at least–is that humanity, in fact “all life” (per the SPOILER), going extinct is a good thing, because life is intrinsically prone to violence. Is this possibly inspired by some school of Buddhism? I only have a back-of-the-envelope knowledge of that religion. Could the imagery of hyphae and mushrooms–you’ll know it when you see it–be related to a sense of change, conversion, and impermanence, because fungi transform what has died?
I also infer that the Trantor-ization of Earth went on partly without human input, because of a particular video clip also seen in that episode. It would explain why there are so many structures and so few beds, or corpses for that matter.
Do these seem plausible to anybody else who’s seen the anime? Are these features also in the manga?

Girl’s Last Tour is a very relaxing read but in a different vein than YKK (though both set in a post-apocalyptic word, which paradoxically lends an air of non-urgency essential to those works).
@12: I certainly didn’t see it in first grade, or at any other time. (I’m 52 and live on the East coast of the US.) Were you forced to watch it? Should we contact your state bureau of Child Protection?

It used to air on the Disney show on OTA TV on Sunday nights pretty much yearly.
The reason for the WWII era stuff seems to be that this is actually a post-post-post-post-post-apocalyptic story. The world platers look to have achieved a tech-level pretty close to magic before blasting themselves back, then they clawed their way back up but not quite as high before doing it all over again. The last go around just managed to get to WWII era tech,probably copied from plans found in libraries, before killing themselves(mostly) off for good. That is why you see such a weird mix of different tech-levels in the ruins the girls find.
Did some further reading on this series online. Don’t know if I could handle it without extensive follow up therapy. But, this sounds like an intense representation of mano no aware, the idea that all beauty is fleeting and it is because it is fleeting that it is beautiful. One of the examples that always stuck with me was of a poet who wrote about the beauty of falling cherry blossoms in the firelight when his home burned (which sounds dumb when I write it but was really lovely when I read it). It sounds like, if the sisters concentrated on the long term, they’d give into despair. But, because they take each moment as it comes, they can experience the beauty their world still has to give.

Chito and Yuuri aren’t sisters and they aren’t kids. In the GLT anthology by Tsukumizu, (no spoilers, it’s not important to the story) Chito dreams that they’re in university, and later they’re in bed and almost kiss before she wakes up. They were probably both taken in by a man they were calling grandpa (which isn’t very odd in Japan). I’d probably stick them in the 18-23 area as for how old they are. They’re just both incredibly mentally stunted due to never really getting to grow up properly. They simply look very young because they’re moeblobs.
@20 While I agree they probably aren’t sisters, they are in a relationship in the alternate Shineji Simulation timeline, I think they are probably pretty young. I’d doubt pre-pubescent like the author originally wrote but still quite young given that in the flashbacks we see of them before their village was destroyed they are noticeably children, and the university dream simply could’ve been a fantasy, it doesn’t really show their age. Plus, whenever you see them in comparison to the two adult characters they still seem noticeably younger, more than if they were also in their twenties. I’d probably place them around 15 or so given how they act and their difference when compared to characters who seem to be mid 30s to mid 40s
