Every hero has a genesis… And with that groan-worthy pun out of the way, check out Paramount Pictures’ first trailer for Sonic The Hedgehog, in which everyone’s favorite speed demon of a hedgehog comes to Earth to interact with humans, Detective Pikachu-style, and possibly save them. Ben Schwartz is serving some uncanny-valley looks with that animation, while James Marsden is his human buddy—and Jim Carrey chews scenery as Dr. Robotnik.
It’s unclear if Sonic is supposed to be more alien or lab experiment, but he’s got a whole host of abilities, some familiar from the Sega games and others decidedly not: part Neo, part Quicksilver, part Doctor Strange (with those ring portals), all attitude.

Sonic The Hedgehog speeds into theaters November 8.
This looks like a complete fail to me while Detective Pikachu looks promising. Is it just because of Ryan Reynolds’ aura?
Over 20 years of Sonic being rendered in 3D and that’s the character design they decided to go with? I’ve seen mascots for used car dealerships that look better.
I say this without hyperbole: every second of that trailer was cringe-worthy.
Holy crap, someone gave Chris Chan access to an animation studio(!).
The screen shot sort of looks like a shoe ad to me.
Why is the character a blue ferret?
I predict massive firings at the studio.
Why, God, why?

I predict an FX studio getting a contract for a major rush job. I mean, unless they think bad fursuit is a good look for Sonic.
I guessing this was another studio’s response to wanting to compete against Detective Pikachu…reminds me of how Deep Impact and Armageddon both came out in the same year as competing “asteroid destroys the earth” plots.
@11 Deep Impact had the better story and acting, but Armageddon had the better effects. I think with Sonichu the Movie there, that DP will have have the full trifecta.
@10
I think it’s more likely Sonic looks this way because a committee of suits wanted it.
Because this kind of disconnect from the source material goes on behind the scenes. Joe Dante said recently on his podcast that when he was making Looney Tunes Back in Action he received a note asking if Bugs had to say “What’s up doc?”
