Tor.com Publishing 2019 Debut Sampler
This is an interesting innovation and I like the science fiction. But how does this differ from other platforms?
When I clicked the link for Apple Books I got “Item not available. The item you requested is not available in your country or region.”
I live in the US, btw.
I had the same issue as #2, from McMillan, indiebound, and Apple books.
I looked and looked – and I didn’t find an actual download link – just links to retailers.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention! It looks like none of the iBooks links on the site are working right now. While we figure out what’s causing this, you should be able to download this title by searching in the iTunes/iBooks apps for “Tor.com Publishing 2019 Debut Sampler”.
ETA: The iBooks link should work again now.
Hi, I’m having the same issue as described above from the Amazon link:
‘This title is not currently available for purchase’
I am in Australia, is this a US-only release?
Why can’t TOR just publish a link to this book? Why do we have to jump through hoops to download it from any of retailers? They make it impossible just to down load it. I have to have an account, I have to read it on line, I have to download it to valid kindle … the list goes on ….
Why?
Is Tor actually giving it away for free or just feeding its channels of distribution? If the later, don’t call it free book. It is not, since I can not just download it. I spent an hour trying …
On top of it, it is not really a book – these are isolated chapters from various books – what is the point of this?
@Matt:
It’s kind of like being in a bookstore and reading a chapter or two of a book that has an interesting cover. The publishers hope that if you like that sample, you’ll be tempted to buy the book. Since this is a digital book, this is the next best thing to that experience. The old adage in publishing was that if you could tempt readers into picking up a book, you were halfway to getting them to buy it. This is the digital version of that.
FWIW, Tor does describe the book as a “sampler” and not an “anthology”. Also, I had no problem obtaining the Kindle edition from Amazon.
If you go to amazon.com.au and search for Tor 2019 Sampler it comes up for Australian customers.

Ken,
congratulations to you! You are way ahead of me …
This still does not change the fact that I can not download this book to my PC from any retail channel available from “free books” links …
It’s similar to the standard “free sample” format for e-books except that they are collected in one volume, and Tor is showcasing new talent that people may not be following. Very convenient in my opinion.
