Two new fantasy novellas from Unconquerable Sun author Kate Elliott! Lamplighter will be published by Tordotcom Publishing in early 2022, with Hex about a year later.
Fellion is a Lamplighter, able to provide illumination through magic. A group of rebel Monarchists free her from indentured servitude and take her on a journey to rescue trapped compatriots from an underground complex of mines.
Along the way they get caught up in a conspiracy to kill the latest royal child and wipe out the Monarchist movement for good.
But Fellian has more than just her lamplighting skills up her sleeve…
Editor Lee Harris says, “I have been wanting to work with Kate for as long as I’ve been editing. Few authors write fantasy as well. This really is a dream come true.”
Kate Elliott is the author of over two dozen fantasy and science fiction novels, including a YA fantasy trilogy (begun with Court of Fives), the acclaimed science fiction novel Jaran, and a short fiction collection, The Very Best of Kate Elliott. Born in Oregon, she now lives in Hawaii.
This is exciting news, but I can’t help being a bit apprehensive too. The last time I heard about an unexpected new project from Elliott, it turned out that the previous series she had just started, and which I loved book 1 (or 4) of, was cancelled — I think it turned out to be contract issues. So what does this mean for the prospect of sequels to _Unconquerable Sun_? Is she going to work on both at once?
@chris — I wanted to answer this question directly.
Lamplighter is a standalone fantasy novella that was completed a while ago (the wheels of publishing grind slow). I have been hard at work on Unconquerable Sun 2 for this entire year — any delays are due to covid and lockdown stress (which I certainly could not have predicted). The second novella mentioned in this deal is unrelated to Lamplighter and also a standalone story (about half written) which I’ll finish on the side. I regret that the sequel to Black Wolves remains in limbo at this time, but the situation is not the same.
Thank you! And glad to hear it. Looking forward to all three, then.
