The journey of the Kerberos has come to an end. Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar’s series 1899 has been canceled by Netflix after just one season.
Co-creator Odar addressed the cancellation in an Instagram post, writing, “We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a second and third season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned. That’s life.”

1899 was set aboard a ship traveling from the United Kingdom to New York City in the titular year. Four years earlier, a ship called the Prometheus (these very subtle names!) disappeared on the same route—so when the Kerberos stumbles across the missing ship, things get very weird indeed.
Reviews of the series were mixed; The Guardian said, “There’s travel through time and space, secret portals, creepy children and a light sprinkling of pro-immigration politics, but the pacing is ultimately more confounding than the sci-fi.” But Australia’s The Age said, “1899 is the true successor to Lost.”
According to Variety, the show came in second on Netflix’s top 10 in its mid-November debut week (behind the juggernaut that is The Crown). Given the cancellation, though, it seems likely it didn’t have staying power.
Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar have an overall deal with Netflix, so this probably isn’t the last project we’ll see from the creators of Dark.
