On the 1st of each month the Tor.com eBook Club gives away a free sci-fi/fantasy ebook to club subscribers. We’re happy to announce that the pick for August 2016 is: The Just City, by Hugo Award-winning author Jo Walton!
The first book in the recently-completed Thessaly trilogy, The Just City tells a tale of time-traveling gods and the brilliant children they choose from throughout human history in their effort to build the ideal human society. And of the god Apollo, who chooses to incarnate as one of the children.
This title will be available for download through August 1st to August
7th 8th. Log in or sign up here to download The Just City. Once you download the book it is yours to keep! But the download window itself is only open for the first 7 days of August. If you’ve missed this particular download window you can still sign up for the club at the above link and be eligible for our next offering on September 1st!
Note: This offer has been extended one day, to August 8th.
Happy reading! To keep track of Tor.com eBook Club offerings and discussion, just bookmark the Tor.com eBook Club tag page.
Loved it! Glad to see it as a Book Club pick.
I tried downloading the MOBI version, and got a 22KB file that Calibre can’t read:
Unknown book type: ‘L//EN” “‘
The EPUB works fine, though…
.mobi version is currently not correct, but the .epub works.
Thanks again!
Mobi file does not work for me as well.
Thanks, SaltManZ, we’ll take a look at the .mobi file now.
Hope you enjoy it, book club people!
Cool, this is one that I kind of wanted to check out but wasn’t sure I’d ever get around to buying, so it certainly makes it an easy choice to grab.
I can’t get either version to work. Amazon keeps sending me error messages when I try to send them to my kindle. (The app doesn’t recognize them either.) I had no problem last month.
Is anyone having an issue putting this onto a Kindle app (not a Kindle proper, but a table running the Kindle application)? Last month I was able to mail The Three Body Problem to the Amazon address associated with the Kindle application and it worked fine. This month Amazon is saying there is a problem with the MOBI format, but as far as I know it meets all the criteria (MOBI format, not too big, etc.) The only other criteria that might affect things is if the MOBI book is password protected in some fashion, but as far as I know it isn’t, though I have no way of checking that.
It appears that if you click the “download” button after verifying your subscription to the Monthly eBook Newsletter, you receive a file that is NAMED something.mobi but contains the HTML of the webpage at http://ebookclub.tor.com/.
Oh noes!
@9: The MOBI file is just plain broken (the filesize is a paltry 22KB, which is the first hint there’s something wrong with the file.)
@8: Kindle (app or device) won’t read EPUBs, so you’re out of luck until the MOBI version is fixed.
edit: @10: Good catch!
Howdy all! We believe we’ve fixed the .mobi file, so try the download again. Thanks for waiting!
Mobi’s still broken for me – the download gives me a file ending with .prc, which file type is apparently a “SQL Server Replication Snapshot Procedure Script”.
@13: .prc and .mobi are both extensions for the Mobipocket format. I’m reading the .prc on my ancient Kindle Touch with no problems right now.
.mobi still broken for me as well
I can confirm the new file works. Make sure you’re opening the new, fixed one — not the old one, which probably has the same title etc.
Aha, finally loaded! Thank you! I love Walton’s books and am thrilled to be able to read this one!
@ReactorChris: Thanks! Works for me.
For those still having troubles, try reloading the eBook of the Month page, if you haven’t already; that’s how I had to do it. You should no longer be downloading a .mobi file, the new file is a .prc.
I am delighted at this month’s pick! I was just about to re-read THE JUST CITY, by Jo Walton, ANYWAY, before continuing to read the rest of the trilogy. Now I can cancel my NYPL hold, since I own my own copy!
I also noticed that on the download page it made me sign up again the first time I went to download, it did not recognize my email. I wonder if that was part of the bug too
I downloaded the MOBI version and e-mailed it to my Kindle app; no problems opening and reading it there. {Jonathan}
It’s still asking me to sign up again. I’m using the exact same email that received the notification for the next book, so I don’t understand why it doesn’t recognize my email as already signed up.
The MOBI/PRC variation works for me now (at least Amazon’s content management recognizes it — will have to wait until getting home to verify on tablet.).
I ran into another, less serious problem with the EBOTMC (EBook of the Month Club) website. It has two field zones on the right hand side. One for signing up for the newsletter and such, and the other for “confirm your details” (which is just the email address.) I signed up for this before in July (actually I think I get the newsletter anyway but wasn’t a big deal to resign up for it). Now in August, I tried to use the “confirm your details” field and it said I wasn’t part of the EBOTMC. So I signed up again and that worked.
I think the “confirm your details” portion of the page is likely not working quite right as it never seems to actually confirm anything.
I just tried again and this time it worked, so maybe the list got updated?
Hi everyone, we’re aware of the issue with the “Confirm Details” page and working on fixing it.
Still having issues with the .mobi file. It keeps telling me there was an error with the file. I’m using an Android tablet with the Kindle app. Thank you!
Thank you very much!
Where does one download the epub version?
I clicked on the confirm details link, confirmed my email and got a .prc file that when uncompressed contained an odd file structure full of xhtml files and another folder with images, the cover and such. The xhtml files are the chapters of the book, so it’s *technically* readable, just not very convenient.
neither one worked for me :(
Just like last month, when I confirm my details and click download (for either file) I get something I can’t open in GoodReader or the Kindle apps on my iPad. Are there directions someplace on how to use these files?
I am already signed in to my tor account. To access this download I cannot confirm but instead the site wants me to create another account. What’s up?
I feel stupid for having to ask this question, but exactly how do I download the mobi file to my Kindle fire? When I click on the file in my Downloads folder the only option I find is for my Palm device, which is not the option I need. Help.
I cannot download the .mobi file. The file transfer won’t start. When I click on it, the screen blinks but the file never downloads.
Getting tossed out every time I try to access the Jo Walton offer — when I’m already signed in, there seems to be a loop that prevents entry. Instead, a message declaring an “error” — no error at my end, so it’s Tor.com’s. PLEASE SOLVE!
I’m getting an error after confirming my details that says to try again or contact Tor through social media.
Hey all, thanks for the heads up. Looks like our system isn’t recognizing when users sign in or confirm their existing registration. We’re fixing it now but it’s possible that the downloads will be inaccessible for the remainder of the day.
We’ll be extending our offer by a day to make up for these errors, and will update this thread once we have a fix in place!
Registered users should be able to download from the Tor.com eBook Club again. Thank you for your patience!
Still getting the error messages.
can’t download for some reason :(
still cant download either version
I’m lucky as I had no trouble getting the mobi emailed to my Kindle account. So glad I joined! I’ve never read Jo Walton and I’ve just fallen into this book. Such (seemingly) effortless writing.
Unable to download either format
Hi folks, if the file downloads are still not working, please comment here with the device and OS you’re using, as that will help us diagnose and solve the issue. Thanks!
No dice. Nothing downloads on OS X 10.11.6
Neither the ePub or Mobi download buttons do anything — they seem to be linked back to http://ebookclub.tor.com/ . I’m on a bog-standard PC running Windows 10.
Windows 10 with Chrome, IE 11 and Edge neither format will download
Just got the ePub download to work.
Running windows 10 on a newer HP, neither link works
I got it – Thanks
Thanks for the info, everyone! We narrowed down the buggy script that was causing the issue and downloads should–fingers crossed–work smoothly now.
nope.. still not working for me… asus tablet running android 5.0
I just tried sending the mobi file to my Kindle, and it’s the original broken version. Is there still a way to download the updated working version?
I signed up last month but never got the email notification of August’s pick. I checked my spam filter and promotions tab and all the other places in gmail that it might have hidden. I know I missed out on this month already, but wanted to let you guys know that the email reminders don’t seem to be making it to everyone who’s signed up.
Neither the MOBI or the EPUB is working for me. Anyone else having trouble?
Same problem as everyone above where the mobi file is 22KB and can’t be read. I downloaded it to my laptop but didn’t try to put it on my Kindle until today, just discovered the problem. Don’t know if anything can be done at this late date? The Three Body Problem and Gardens of the Moon both work fine. I also have the problem mentioned above that the site doesn’t recognize my existing registration. I see the response above that this is fixed, but it happened to me again in September as well as August.
