Roger Hargreaves was a renowned children’s book author and illustrator responsible for the Mr Men and Little Miss series’, and many others. Though he has been gone nearly thirty years, his imagination lives on–and will soon be found in a joint project between Sanrio, Penguin Random House, and BBC Worldwide as a series of Doctor Who books created in his illustration style.
There will be one book for each of the twelve numbered Doctors, each written and illustrated by Roger Hargreaves’s son Adam. The first four of these books will be available in spring 2017. Here is more information from the press release:
Jan Paterson, Head of Book and Audio Publishing, BBC Worldwide commented, “We are thrilled to be teaming up with Sanrio on this fantastic project and think that fans will love these creative incarnations of the Doctor reimagined in the ‘Hargreaves’ style. We’re always looking for innovative ways to engage our fans so this is the perfect partnership for us.”
Alastair McHarrie, Licensing Director of Sanrio Global Ltd said, “There is a wealth of unofficial fan-created content online. We wanted to give something back to these supporters so we’ve created the first official Hargreaves mash-up. Who better to partner with than another classic British property, Doctor Who. We couldn’t be more excited.”
The fact that the project sprung from a desire to engage with the fan mashups that grace the internet every day make this series even more unique. Take a peek at three more covers below….
Who, beyond WHO geeks who will buy anything, would be interested in these books? A majority of kids and most people who aren’t old enough to be grandparents don’t even know who the earliest Doctors are?
Excuse me. Im proud to be an old fart and a grandmother. Grew up watching dr who. Will take a set or three :)
@2 I’m old enough, too, but only have a niece and some nephews I can corrupt in the ways of WHO. He he!
You are one of those WHO geeks I mentioned.
@@@@@ MByerly – I think you might be underestimating just how big a deal both Doctor Who and the Mr Men are in huge swathes of British society (*cough* the Home Counties *cough*). Some kids might not be able to name all the actors but the majority even of the Lost Generation (those of us who grew up without our own Doctor and who were therefore raised on the BBC repeats, and thus have a weird variety of responses to the question “who was your Doctor?”) would at least recognise the early doctors when shown pictures, particularly after all the 50th anniversary stuff we had a few years ago.
these images are adorable
Wow! – there is an avid following of anything Who, in the U S. Combining wit the Mr. Men is brilliant! I can’t wait, so fun!
