At the beginning of each month, the Tor.com eBook Club gives away a free sci-fi/fantasy ebook to club subscribers.

We’re happy to announce that the pick for March 2017 is Shadow & Claw, a singular volume collecting the first two books of Gene Wolfe’s classic series “The Book of the New Sun,” described by Neil Gaiman as “The best science fiction novel of the last century”!

The Book of the New Sun is unanimously acclaimed as Gene Wolfe’s most remarkable work, hailed as “a masterpiece of science fantasy comparable in importance to the major works of Tolkien and Lewis” by Publishers Weekly, and “one of the most ambitious works of speculative fiction in the twentieth century” by The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Shadow & Claw brings together the first two books of the tetralogy in one volume:

The Shadow of the Torturer is the tale of young Severian, an apprentice in the Guild of Torturers on the world called Urth, exiled for committing the ultimate sin of his profession—showing mercy toward his victim. Severian’s story continues in The Claw of the Conciliator, as he journeys north to the city of Thrax.

Thank you for the book. I love this program, but it would have been cool to feature a female author for Women’s History Month.

Wow, what a great choice! I’ve wanted to read this for a while.

The Book of the New Sun’s reputation is well-earned. Wolfe’s writing is gorgeous and the text especially rewards multiple readings. A lot is going on behind the scenes and you have to put the dots together. However, when you do, it is amazing!

I hope this means we’re going to get some insightful analysis of it here on Tor.com.  It’s been years since I’ve read it and have had plenty of time to think about it and read others’ impressions – and I could still use the help.

How about running a contest / give away where you don’t have to be from the US or Canada to qualify? I would like an e-book copy of this book too.

One of the very best books Tor has ever published. It’s even better the second time. I’ve read this book countless times and there are still scenes that move me to tears.

And God rest the soul of the editor, David Hartwell.

I am enjoying last months book (the bloodline feud) immensely. Thanks, tor – thor.

Thanks for making this book available. I first read it almost 40 years ago(!) and it still haunts me, so I’m really looking forward to a re-read. Does anyone else think it has a very similar “feel” to Robert Silverberg’s “Majipoor” series?

karlywarly,

Agreed, but I think the Majipoor series and the Book of the New Sun are similar because they both inherited DNA from Jack Vance (i.e. the Dying Earth and the Demon Princes series).

I wonder what is up with my computer or Norton or Kindle?  I downloaded this book and the norton popped up and said some sort of virus came with it… something.   Anyone else?
