“Hide and Q”

Captain’s Log: En route to a medical emergency, the Enterprise encounters Q once again, who insists they abandon their mission of mercy. The Q was intrigued by their encounter at Farpoint, and wants to apparently test humanity further—he does so first while appearing as a three-headed Aldebaran serpent, then later as a Starfleet admiral. He sends Riker, Data, La Forge, Yar, and Worf to a Class-M planet where they are to participate in what Q describes as a “deadly game.” When Yar objects, Q calls it a game penalty and sends her to the penalty box: back to the Enterprise.
Picard, meanwhile, is stuck alone on the bridge, cut off from the rest of the ship with malfunctioning instruments. He’s joined by Yar in her penalty box, and then by Q, who arrives to talk to him. They soon make a wager: if Q succeeds, Picard will give up his command; if he doesn’t, Q will never bother humanity again.

He pits them against aliens dressed as French soldiers from the same era as Q’s outfit, armed with muskets that fire bolts of energy. Q tells Riker that he has the power of the Q and can send them all back to the ship. He does so, and Q and he have a talk. The Q-Continuum has become curious about humanity, and their potential. They wish to learn more, and want Riker to join them. Riker, however, refuses—so Q disappears, and brings back the same group as before, plus Picard, Yar, and Wes, but now without their phasers.
The aliens attack again, and Worf takes down a few before being killed, and Wes is killed a moment later. Riker then transports everyone back to the Enterprise, bringing Wes and Worf back to life.
Picard asks Riker to promise not to use his newfound abilities, as they’re too dangerous for any human to deal with. Riker agrees, giving his word.
So naturally they show up at the rescue (on time, thanks to Q manipulating time), and Riker is tested right away when a young girl is found dead, and Riker cannot bring her back to life because he promised Picard he wouldn’t.
Riker gets angry at his inability to save the girl, and his arrogance becomes palpable—he even starts calling the captain “Jean-Luc.” He tries to explain that he’s the same old Riker, and that the Q has the best of intentions, and the crew believes neither statement. Riker wishes to simply help his friends out, and Q—dressed now as a monk—urges Picard to fulfill the request.
In full “I’m smarter than you” mode, Picard agrees and encourages everyone to accept Riker’s gifts if they so choose.
In short order, Riker ages Wes ten years, gives La Forge working eyes, and provides a sex partner for Worf. Data refuses to let Riker make him human, and the others reject the gifts as well. (La Forge pointedly says, “I don’t like who I’d have to thank.”) Riker realizes that Picard was right—he couldn’t handle it. Picard doesn’t actually say “I told you so,” but you can tell he’s thinking it very loudly.
As soon as Riker renounces his powers, the rest of the Q-Continuum rather violently summons Q home, since he lost Picard’s wager.
The Boy!?: Wes gets aged ten years, fulfilling his wildest dreams, and earlier in the episode he’s stabbed in the back, fulfilling the wildest dreams of the legions of Wesley-haters. Both, however, are reversed.

If I Only Had a Brain : Data refuses to be made human by Riker, because he knows that—even if it was real to Q and to Riker—it would not be real to him.
Q also disguises himself as Data, and deLancie looks very silly in yellow contact lenses….
There is No Honor in Being Pummeled: Worf puts on a decent show, leaping over the railing to point a phaser at Q, growling at him, refusing to drink with him, and scouting the enemy combatants. He takes down two of those combatants unarmed before they kill him.
He also gets the nickname “Micro-Brain” from Q, a nickname that would stick. Oh, and he refuses sex for no obvious reason. (See below.)
No Sex, Please, We’re Starfleet: La Forge apparently has the hots for Yar, a fact never mentioned before and never mentioned again.
Meanwhile, Worf claims to have no place in his life for sex now—a position he would reverse in “The Emissary.” And when he started dating Troi. And when he married Jadzia Dax. And when he slept with Ezri Dax. And .
Welcome Aboard: John deLancie returns as Q, and is as magnificently snotty as ever. He leaves even more teeth marks on the scenery in his sophomore outing, all to good effect.

Trivial Matters: This would be the last time we’d see the “Q force field.” Q was firmly established as a recurring character in this episode, and he would go on to appear in almost every season, as well as several times on the spinoffs Deep Space Nine and Voyager.
Q has appeared regularly in the novels and comic books as well. For purely egotistical reasons, I wish to mention one in particular, the 2007 novel Q & A by, well, me—it provides the true reason why Q was so interested in humanity’s potential in this episode.
The episode’s co-writer with Roddenberry was actually Maurice Hurley, one of the show’s producers, who would go on to become the show-runner in the second season. He had a ton of writing credits on the show, and it’s unclear why he used a pseudonym for this one. (He would also write the second-season Q episode, “Q Who.”)
Make It So: An episode that is a joy to watch, mostly, but is clumsily written and has a lot of head-scratchers and predictable outcomes. The entire arc with Riker is so paint-by-numbers the color is practically dripping off the screen.
The penalty box was introduced to no good end except to pointlessly remove Yar from the field of battle—Q’s threat of putting someone else in the penalty box and killing Yar is never fulfilled. And then when Q reverses the penalty, Yar is still stuck on the bridge.
It actually reeks of a certain sexism that Yar is taken out of the action before the action starts, and when Riker gives gifts to the bridge crew, Crusher and Yar are completely left out. (Troi isn’t even in the episode.)
The episode also makes what is obviously now a tactical error in putting Q alongside Riker. Jonathan Frakes and John deLancie don’t have a tenth of the chemistry that deLancie has with Sir Patrick Stewart. This is made painfully obvious here: the Picard-Q scene in the ready room where they trade Shakespeare quotes simply sparkles (with the added entertainment value of Royal Shakespeare Company veteran Stewart declaring, “I know Hamlet!”), where the banter-trading with Riker is leaden. Future episodes with Q paired deLancie and Stewart much more regularly.
And indeed, what saves the episode are deLancie and Stewart. The former in particular is so obviously having fun with the role that the episode itself is also fun despite its flaws.
Warp factor rating: 5.

You’re right: de Lancie and Stewart save the episode. I liked this one a lot when it was new — and I was a sophomore in high school — but it hasn’t aged well. (Nor have I, I suppose, but we’ll save that for another time.) Even at the time, when I was showing it to my mother — in that brief window of time after Star Trek IV when I thought I might make a fellow Trek fan out of her — her only comment was, “It’s awfully talky, isn’t it?”
I still adore the ready room scene, though. It’s not only a great performance from two true thespians but also a crystal-clear summary of the heart of “Star Trek”‘s philosophy:
Q: Surely you don’t see your species that way.
Picard: I see us one day becoming that!

–We know how well Q held up his end of the bargain on that one! No wonder when, in “Devil’s Due,” it is considered whether Ardra is Q, Picard correctly asserts, “Q wouldn’t bother with contracts!”

–I wonder if it was inviting too many comparisons to the Tholian Web.
I do have to say: comparisons with Trelaine aside (could HE be a Q?), Q is one of my favorite antagonists from the 80s/90s. In a way, he reminds me of the Genie from “Aladdin,” though obviously more menacing. I always enjoyed Q’s exchanges with Picard (yes, including in “Q and A;” “I just wanted to see you in tights!”) and later with Vash, and one gets the impression that his snotty comments must have been a lot of fun to write! (Even I got a chance to write for him a little bit, when I used him in a “Trek” RPG I was hosting.)

Worf does much more than “putting a decent show”; he’s got courage to spare: “And now a personal request, sir. Permission to clean up the bridge.” Suicidal, but brave.
Lektu: That line wasn’t from this episode, that was from the pilot, “Encounter at Farpoint.” In this episode he jumps over the railing to point a weapon (that’s useless), then sticks with symbolic gestures: growling on the bridge (something the character would do a lot in Q’s presence), and pointedly pouring out the drink Q provides and tossing away the glass (which was beautifully played by Michael Dorn). And then he gets himself killed. He doesn’t really accomplish anything in the episode — of course, aside from Picard, neither does anyone else…..
krad: Ah, sorry I mixed the eps. It’s been a long time. And thanks for the correction.
“Clumsily written” is an understatement. Most of the first season is clumsily written, but the dialogue in this one is barely competent. No wonder Hurley used a pseudonym. I mean, seriously, Q is a superintelligent, gigayears-old, nigh-omnipotent entity, and the best insult he can come up with is “Macro-head for a micro-brain?” A ten-year-old could concoct better material. Dialogue was never one of Roddenberry’s great strengths, but he was in particularly poor form here (unless this is one of the ones where his lawyer did the rewrites).
The episode also suffers from budget problems, with another cheap-looking soundstage planet and a ridiculous video effect for the Aldebaran serpent.
It does have some points of interest, though, as noted. The Shakespeare scene is cool — although a little awkward conceptually, since by his own admission Picard is using the quote in a different sense than Hamlet used it. And there’s the seed of a valid idea in Riker’s temptation to exploit the Q power, but it’s weakly and anticlimactically handled.
The cool thing though (coming from a theatre background) is that most of Shakespeare can be twisted and molded to one’s own end. You can make heroes into nearly villains and bad guys so affable that you feel sort for them. This mere fact is why we’re so inundated with the myriad of representational settings and modernizations for his plays. Sure there are soliloquies that, when in context, need to be presented in a way for the play to make sense. But as a one off monologue? They’re perfect for the purpose Picard uses here. Oh yes, he knows “Hamlet”: knows it so well he can drop that knowledge on Q AND use to meet his own ends in winning the argument.
Worf “not having a place for sex in his life” seems to change after he meets his son. Apparently, part of the Klingon Code of Honor has a HUGE problem with pre-marital sex. Worf does relax on that point in later seasons and in DS9 (as I’m sure anyone would when encountering either on-screen incarnation of Dax). Besides, everyone has had that one former significant other that has totally warped our ideas about relationships and sex.
JasonD: No, remember, he does the deed with K’Ehleyr in “The Emissary” in the second season. He doesn’t learn about Alexander’s existence until “Reunion” in the fourth season. He did wish to take the marriage oath with her back in “The Emissary,” which she refuses, but he still goes ahead and boinks her on the holodeck in the late second season, despite a year earlier saying he had no place for it in his life.
For that matter, when he and Riker discussed the matter in “Justice,” prior to “Hide and Q,” Worf seemed perfectly open to the notion of recreational sex, he just was concerned about doing it with “fragile” humans.
The line really didn’t make any sense. Kinda like La Forge’s out-of-nowhere interest in Yar. Kind of baffling in an episode written by the second-season show-runner and the show’s co-creator……
Overall good one…
I for one am GLAD we did’nt see more graphic klinon sex. And once again wonder how TNG klingons lived so long if that’s how they mate. Vulcans only go that nuts every seven years.
Any chance you can keep putting in trivia notes for the novels, where appropriate? It’s nice having that link back to them, if the characters are ever followed up on there.

This was actually the 2nd TNG episode I ever saw after Farpoint. I was naturally disappointed, because I wanted to see this new crew do something other than tangle with obnoxious, omnipotent aliens. It was also the first thing I ever recorded on VHS. So of course, I watched it over and over and over.
From this episode on I was a regular watcher of ST:TNG, though it took me a while to get caught up on all the 1st season episodes I had missed. I managed to record most of the reruns, but I had missed a few. I later discovered that I really hadn’t missed much at all…
I also have to agree that Patrick Stewart and John DeLancie save this episode. I cringe at the line “animal things” (why so imprecise?) and that it keeps coming up again…it’s rather a silly description. The animal things themselves are even more silly. I also think the Yar/Picard penalty box scene is uncomfortably awkward.
As for Worf and the Klingon woman, I also think it’s ridiculous in retrospect that part of his excuse is that she is from a world now alien to him. Later he obviously becomes very engrossed in Klingon Culture as he (and Klingon Culture itself) are further developed.
@don3comp: Though many have speculated that Trelane is a Q (it has even been novelized), I think it has been officially stated he is not, though I could be wrong. In any case, I think there would be descrepancies. If you remember, Trelane relied on technology in some part for his powers, and gets mad when Kirk destroys his machine. He also does not have the knowledge of the Q, in that he is only familiar up to 400-year-old Earth. Also, he turns out to be a child. In the Voyager episode Q2, Q’s son is established to be the first child born in the continuum. Furthermore, he is established to have the Q’s knowledge (or at least understanding) even as an infant. The addition of this later material kind of quashes somewhat the notion that Trelane was a Q.
After rewatching the Blu-Ray, seeing the screencaps above really shows how much better it looks in blu-Ray.
Patrick Stewart and John DeLancie easily make this episode far better than what it could have been. Both know their characters that well. And most of the faults are with the writing, and yet – for an early season 1 story – the cliches don’t feel as tacky as they could be. None of the acting is poor, and the usual season 1 slips (bad writing, Data’s contractions, Wes the Wonderboy) don’t make themselves prominent. Even “macro-head with a micro-brain” is tolerable; Q’s goal is to insult the crew. He even lies about the Federation consquering the Klingons (the Klingons saw the humans’ honorable act at Narendra III, which was a catalyst for a later peace treaty – again, Q’s goal is just to be a snot, and it works.)
What doesn’t work is the melodrama for “the penalty box” , which is truly lame. Patrick Stewart and Denise Crosby both manage to deliver their lines without getting OTT or by corpsing (don’t ask how!) but, wow, that stilted dialogue alone would be horrible to go through.
But I would put this ep over any of Voyager’s… especially as, had Q not introduced the Federation to the Borg (Janeway admits it), they all would have been taken by surprise and assimilated… but that only shows Janeway wasn’t reading Picard’s log entries thoroughly… All Q could do in Voyager is to call Chakotay “Chuckles”, show how much bigger his tattoo is, and turn the Continuum into a farce. The concept of allusion to show the Continuum in a way the humans could perceive is interesting, but even TNG season 1 knew better than to “go there”…
I give this one a solid B. Frakes is still not quite comfortable as Riker, not the guy he would become with the beard. I do wonder if the Bard himself would have agreed with Picard’s appropriation of his quote, or more with Q’s aghast reaction.
A good enough early episode on how power corrupts, although I find it hard to believe that a First Officer like Riker would have given in to such arrogance so quickly.
As I recall, Tasha Yar didn’t actually ask for anything and it’s difficult to know what she would have wanted (a Picard clone?)
I don’t remember Dr. Crusher being on the bridge during Riker’s gifting of the others, and I don’t know what she might have asked for, either.
Dr. Crusher was definitely on the bridge, she was trying to leave with Wes before Riker intervened.
Ancient reply, but… it was kinda-sorta-not really-maybe hinted at a Geordi-Tasha thing in Naked Now, when he was baring his soul (and eyes) to her.
What’s remarkable about this episode is how it misses what Q can do for the series compared to the two direct hits to follow (Q Who and Deja Q). As mentioned, it’s partly the Riker-Q chemistry that’s completely lacking. What it does set up, and I didn’t realize it until I just re-watched it, is the spectacular moment at the end of Deja Q where Q gives Data (who again insists he not simply be made human) a laugh. Overall, it’s mostly a slog through “what if I could be a god, but knew I shouldn’t” philosophical debates, and pretty incohesive even at that. Q follows up on his “trial” of humanity by a predictable temptation that plays out clumsily: it’s kind of a ramble of a story until the closing scene. There, of course Westley is going to say he doesn’t want to short-circuit ten years of his life, and Data would know more than anyone how unique he is, but why would Geordi say “no thanks” to getting his sight? Because screw Q, that guy sucks? Even watching it the first time it was a little tedious. Can’t remember when I first saw it, but even then I wasn’t too impressed. I’d say around warp six for the first watch, and maybe a four overall.
Q has some flashes in Season One: it’s always great to see someone just having fun with a role. What I find truly remarkable in watching the two S1 Q episodes, and then comparing them to Q Who, is how quickly and fully the character gelled. You’d think a different writer was behind it all, but it seems the only change was Melinda Snodgrass as executive editor. Not sure if she deserves a whole raft of credit, or if someone had an epiphany; I’m just glad Q stuck around for the second effort!
@21: Maurice Hurley solely wrote “Q Who?” He wrote a much more interesting story and dialogue for Q than the writers did for the character’s two prior appearances. It made all the difference in the world.

Krad: Geordi refused the gift yes, but not until he at least got to experience it for a minute. That was actually a great moment when he was taking everything in and remarked on Tasha’s beauty. Loved LeVar Burton’s acting there.
Pretty silly episode overall with cringe-inducing dialogue and just making Riker look like a complete pompous asshole. But I have to admit I also enjoy how over-the-top it is from the battles with the animal soldiers to the gifting scene. Regarding that last scene, Worf’s comments are obviously retroactively contradictory given the romantic/sexual relationships he would be shown to have beginning in the very next season, and also learning he was into Klingon culture as a boy despite being raised by a human family. Pretty wild that he was engaging in Klingon “sex” right there in front of the whole bridge crew. Wesley must have been especially intrigued. Speaking of Wesley, it’s funny to see him aged up 10 years (and Wil Wheaton’s voice dubbed in) with another actor as Wheaton will look nothing like this actor 10 years hence in real life. Pretty bad parenting by mama Crusher to even allow her son to attend this very adult meeting.
@19: I think Riker’s gift to Beverly would be to bring her husband and Wesley’s father Jack back to them.
As for a gift to Yar, Riker wouldn’t have been aware of it at the time but having Ishara rejoin Tasha would have been nice.
And if Troi had been there, bringing her dead father back to her also seems like the most obvious choice of gifts.
I’d rate this episode a 5 as well.

Keith is absolutely right about this episode. I found myself zoning out in the scenes with Riker and Q alone.
I like Yar a lot but the show does a poor job with her so far. It hasn’t used Troi well either. What bothered me the most about the episode though was Worf’s moment with the mate Riker provided; giving the dark-skinned aliens a violent, animalistic courtship is racist no matter how I look at it.

Ooh, you have a point. I don’t think I ever thought of that before, but that’s my privilege showing. Also, the fact that the illusory Klingon woman spends most of the scene kneeling or crawling on all fours is rather sexist.
Although I have noticed that Worf did tend to fit into the “angry black strongman” stereotype that was all too common back then — see also Stargate SG-1‘s Teal’c, though like Worf, he managed to grow well beyond that stereotype in time. At least TNG also had Geordi to provide a contrast to that.
Anyway, in addition to all that’s been said above about how poorly that moment fits with later portrayals of Worf’s relationships and Klingon sexuality, note that it’s also a prototype version of Klingon female makeup that didn’t last. The illusory Klingon woman has a smaller skull plate and narrower ridges, with hair covering more of the scalp, than the males, or than the females we’d see later on. This is the one time that Michael Westmore attempted to depict sexual dimorphism in Klingon ridges, which otherwise was only done in the movies, where Klingon females (Valkris, Vixis, Azetbur) had much subtler ridges than most of the men. But it didn’t look great, and I’m glad he abandoned it later on.
Well, I have to say my rewatch of a re-watch is going pretty well. I had it in my head that most of season 1 was out unwatchable, but quite frankly all of these are worth watching for one reason or another, especially on a re-watch in light of what these characters became later on. Kind of fascinating to see what character traits they decided to throw away or emphasize. Picard’s delivery of “quite right so you should” is classic.
And I’m going to disagree slightly with those who would suggest the portrayal of Klingon mating here is racist or sexist simply because these characters have dark skin. The female may have been on her knees for some time, but I didn’t perceive that as subservient. Frankly, I saw them as equals. Aggressive, primal, and violent, but in a way that I perceived as the natural progression of Klingon courtship. Just because a sexual partner or mate assumes a subservient role doesn’t mean he or she has relinquished an equal role in the ritual. JMO.
@29/fullyfunctional: Of course consensual dom/sub play is an equal partnership when done right, but that’s not what we’re talking about here. That’s about how things actually are, but the issue here is perception and cultural assumptions. There’s a long history in fiction of stereotyping nonwhite cultures as “savage,” and a long history of science fiction projecting those racist tropes onto fictional aliens. Klingons were always coded as non-white, after all, going back to the original TOS depiction of them as “space Mongols” with dark brown greasepaint.
This episode offers pretty good reasons for why Yar left the show. She has no role to play here besides damsel in distress or attractive object.
Well, Denise Crosby’s acting in this episode wasn’t exactly her best. I can imagine the producers not resisting the idea when she approached them wanting to quit. The penalty box scene between Picard and Yar is particularly awful, not just acted but as written. Yar basically insinuates that if Picard wasn’t her captain she’d be jumping his bones. Can you imagine if there was a gender reversal and a male Yar made that remark to a female Picard? Said junior officer would be thrown in the brig and drummed out of the service so fast!
I gotta say, Worf pouring out that drink is majestic, although I wish he’d just (mike-)dropped the glass afterwards instead of tossing it aside.
