Tor Books is proud to reveal the endpapers for Brandon Sanderson’s upcoming Words of Radiance, sequel to the New York Times bestselling The Way of Kings! Artist Michael Whelan shares his thoughts on the process of designing the painting and on collaborating with Ben McSweeny. See preliminary sketches from both artists below!

When Irene Gallo proposed a second painting for Words of Radiance, I immediately knew it was Shallan we were talking about. Indeed, like many fans, I had felt that the story was becoming as much Shallan’s as Kaladin’s; she merited equal representation in the book’s design, as far as it was possible to do so.  At the time I did the cover painting I did not have a scene available that would have allowed me to faithfully portray her and Kaladin in a way which worked in the design, so I resigned myself to seeing her be the focus on another edition later in the series. Therefore, I was glad to hear that TOR wanted to go the extra mile in order to give Shallan some page space in the book.

Unfortunately, my carefully wrought schedule for 2013 was in ruins by the middle of the year and I was afraid I might not be able to get the second painting done in time for it to be included in the book. This proved to be a legitimate concern, as it turned out to be a photo finish. I only delivered the scan of the painting at the last hour, a real squeaker.

Thank goodness, then for Ben McSweeney. He was my wingman on this project, providing me with important details I would have overlooked as well as executing a detailed layout based on our first sketches. This saved a lot of time and guesswork, which would have delayed my completion of the assignment. Of course we’ve all seen his artwork for the first volume of this series (The Way of Kings) and I was impressed by his draughting skill and exhaustive knowledge of all things Rosharian. Since his is the “hand” behind Shallan’s actual drawings, I figured there would no better person I could go to for help on this part of the project.  Though swamped with work himself, he generously made time in his schedule to give me the information I needed for a jump-start on the painting. Thanks Ben!

At Moshe Feder’s suggestion, we initially bounced around the idea of portraying Shallan sketching a scene that appears in the book. Though it would have made a nice painting, I worried that the scene described would end up busy and full of saturated color…like the cover paintings already done for the two books.  I elected instead to perch her on a rock ledge overlooking the Shattered Plain, and keep the colors in a more muted (for me anyway…) range. I thought there should be some hint of battle and war out there in the landscape, so Ben’s layout drawing included an army and bridging equipment in the near background, all of which looked cool. At the last minute, though, I decided to leave much of them out so the stuff on the right side didn’t detract overmuch from Shallan as the center of attention.

Knowing me, however, I’ll probably change my mind and go back to the painting and put the army in after all. The fan in me demands it!

The sketches:

One of Ben’s floral studies for Shallan’s sketchbook, featured in The Way of Kings. For the endpapers illo, Ben suggested that we try to show a sequence of transformation for one type of Rosharian plant form, to illustrate how they unfold like a barnacle depending on weather conditions. I thought it was a great idea, so we worked to compose the plants so as to capture that effect.

VERY rough little thumbnail sketches from Ben, to get things rolling. Based on the first scene idea.

I sketched out a few of my own, exploring the scene from different angles. My plant forms were too obviously terrestrial in structure.

He sent me some other views, with Shallan actually drawing.

I really liked this one a lot.

Wishing to move her to the left, I did a sketch in one of my sketchbooks and sent it to Ben.

After a bit more discussion he went into this detailed scene, which was the main inspiration for the painting.

Artwork that tells a story have appeal for me. Whelan’s artwork tells a story about Shellan, and that is part of why this works for me.

The covers and illustrations of this series are a major reason why I buy it both in HC and for Kindle. The books are art in and of themselves (in a way similar to Marie Brennan’s A NATURAL HISTORY OF DRAGONS)

Art is why I prefer iBooks over Kindle. They do not crunch the resolution near as much. You can usually read map text in iBooks (unlike Kindle). But the resolution on all platforms is ridiculously low.

It does make you wonder if this is a reason why Tor was so supportive of Brandon’s request for book art; to give the printed book a value add.

Oh wow! I really like this painting, I can never explain what it’s about a painting that captures my mind, but this one really does. Excellent work.

This is gorgeous! Does this mean the KR table and alternate table are gone from WoK? I thought the endpaper staying the same thru the whole series was a stipulation of Tor doing color Endpapers.

AG Rooster: We did shift things around for this. I don’t want to commit to what went where, since the office closed this week and I can’t double check my facts. But when you have a Whelan, you make room. ;-)

What’s the little creature next to her? A spren that will bond with her? I assumed if a spren did it would be a ‘symbolhead’

This is gorgeous. Captures the spirit of the character so well. Also I liked the left one better as we are used to reading from left to right, and so looking towards right opens the whole image.

I am also re-reading the TWoK before the Words of Radiance comes out.

I did notice one small thing though. Her sketchbook is “larger” than the sachet/ bag she carries. I guess my engineer’s mind started to work. ;-)

Aw man this is great, I wish it could be the actual cover!

Fantastic. The only thing I take exception with, is the little cremling to her side. It looks just a bit too much like somekind of Disney sidekick/cute animal friend.

I heard something about Whelan redrawing the WoR cover, so that the version we were last shown, was not the actual final version. Irene – can you give us a few more details on that?

Michael,
I love the last sketch with the army and the bridge on the Shattered plain and I don’t think it detracts from Shallan.

He re-worked the face a bit. We’ll release updated wallpapers on that next week.

Thanks, Irene Gallo! We all very much look forward to it.
You guys are doing great work and adding some truly great art to some books that are already great literature.

I have to admit I am happy to hear that the face was re-worked. I absolutely ADORE Whelan’s work, it is purely amazing, but something about Kaladin’s face on the WoR cover disturbed me. I look forward to the final cover!
And this … She reminds me Anne of Green Gables a bit :) but it is more beautiful than I could have imagined :)

6. The little critter is just a cremling. We’re always looking for another chance to make little crustacean-things look cute. It’s very challenging!

I believe it’s a Cremling, mostly carrion eaters, they feed on dead bodies, or defenseless stuff.

Walker @2 – “It does make you wonder if this is a reason why Tor was so supportive of Brandon’s request for book art; to give the printed book a value add.”
I don’t know if that’s true, but if it is, what a fantastic idea! :)

Irene @5 – “But when you have a Whelan, you make room. ;-)”
I’ll just bet! This is so amazing.

I’m looking forward to seeing the new cover, after hearing what Brandon had to say about Mr. Whelan’s reworking of it.

I like this picture of Shallan. (I admit that I am somewhat biased as she is my favorite character.) I am glad that the face of Shallan in the final picture was changed from the earlier scetches. Her face in the earlier schetches is too cartoonish. Also, the face is of somebody younger than a 17 year old. I feel the final picture does capture her age correctly.

Interesting to see she is at the Shattered Plains. It appears all the major characters (based on this pacture and the WoR cover that was previously released) will all be at the same local.

Thanks for reading my musings,

Oh my, gorgeous work! I mentioned this on facebook, but I think it is worth repeating. Can’t this be the cover for the book? It would be great (for those that prefer the Kaladin cover) if we could choose our favorite cover. Shallan is also my favorite character, and it is sad that such a gorgeous creation won’t be the cover of the book.

When this series is finished is it too much to hope for an “Art of the Stormlight Archive” artbook? I find this stuff fascinating!

@21 – I saw that too. :) Well, he did say they were rough sketches…

I love the contemplative image of Shallan, however, I’ve always pictured her in my mind as more blonde than redhead. Perhaps I’m just not remembering enough about her description. I’ve yet to re-read TWoK before WoR comes out, but it is second on my list for 2014.

Avatar

Nope. Definitely a redhead. “She was pale-skinned in an era when Alethi tan was seen as the mark of true beauty, and though she had light blue eyes, her impure family line was manifest in her auburn-red hair.”

I think this is a lovely image, but to my eye it looks like a color cast might have been introduced when the painting was digitized. Here is a comparison of the version above and one I color-corrected as an example:

Wonderful artwork as always, Michael. And thank you for the commentary.

Does the sky in this image indicate that the Rosharian atmosphere is not always driven by winds of a particular direction? Other discussions had led me to believe that there was a continuously prevailing jetstream, which wouldn’t permit such a “lazy” cloud formation as shown here.

The li’l cremling is awesome. Makes me think of a mantis shrimp. :)

ChocolateRob

I vastly prefer this one to the actual cover image, this is Shallan’s book after all.
However I would move the cremling to among the rockbuds so that it looks more naturally placed and less like a disney side-kick. I also quite like the sketches where you can better see the army she is drawing.

Avatar

@33 I’m kinda surprised they’d give Shallan any more time until she encounters Kaladin. After all he now knows what he is and has spoken the oaths.Until she finds out what she is I don’t think she’s interesting enough to lead a book.

Avatar

Kaladin has only spoken his first two Oaths – he’s got three more to go. As for Shallan… we don’t really know much about her yet. And she has to get from Kharbranth to the Shattered Plains before she can meet Kaladin, right? Journey before destination!

The army soldiers in formation I think give a needed perspective for the size of the shattered planes, w/o them the planes look a lot smaller than they really are.
