Star Trek 3 Confirmed For Release During Show’s 50th Anniversary Year

This week during a presentation at CineEurope Paramount Pictures confirmed their plan to release Star Trek 3 in 2016. The film and its story, now helmed by Roberto Orci, is rumored to be tackling the grey areas of the Federation morality for which Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek is famed. Although our own Emmet Asher-Perrin hopes they can squeeze in this easy retcon of Khan, as well.

Although already rumored for a 2016 release date, Paramount’s confirmation is welcome news to Star Trek fans hoping for a big-screen presence during the year of the show’s 50th anniversary. It’s not every day that a science fiction series hits the 50 year mark. And it’s nice to have another excuse to make a big deal about Star Trek!

It’s so sad that the 50th anniversary of Star Trek will be irreparably marred by Roberto Orci’s Star Trek movie. It’s a travesty. Honestly, who the hell is running Paramount.

It’s just kind of a shame that a talentless hack who knows nothing about Star Trek is in charge of the project.

This is very exciting. I hope the people who don’t like the new Trek don’t watch it… And stop whining about it too!

You know what would be also great for the 50th Anniversary of a Franchise that is predominantly known for its TV shows?

Announcing a new Star Trek TV Series…

Now I’m going to go into a corner and cry because this will not happen… :-(

Don’t like it? Don’t watch it. You’re not entitled to anything. Trek is expanding to new audiences. If they wanted to keep it like it always was for a bunch of whinging cretins it would sink fast.

Moderator here. Disliking and critizing the new/old/whatever Star Trek is fine, but please keep things civil and be respectful of other commenters.

@5 Abrams’ two Star Trek movies are deeply, profoundly stupid. The plot holes insult anyone willing to look at those movies critically and not as a dumb JJ Abrams fanboy (we’re looking at you #5 :)).

There are many stupid things in “Star Trek: Into Darkness” but one I love to point out is the interstellar range Transporter technology. But if you like to wallow in idiocies like that – please continue

Would that be a ret-retcon?

Don’t like it? Don’t watch it. You’re not entitled to nice things. Trek is shriveling away for easier consumption. If they wanted to keep it thoughtful and well-written for a bunch of “whinging” cretins it would sink fast.

‘Exploring the grey areas of the Federation morality’?

Why is optimism dead? Who killed it?

Not overjoyed at a movie. Would rather see a good TV series come back. Why don’t the suits listen?

Yeah, I’d rather see a new series. Of course, there could still be plenty to complain about with that, but at least a series has a chance to grow and work out the kinks (see TNG, DS9).

As for the movie, Orci being an inexperienced director and a “hack writer” (his words) along with two unknown writers on the project doesn’t exactly have me leaping with joy. We’ll see….

I don’t know how to feel about this. I loved the first re-boot that Abrams did and I’m willing to re-watch it at a drop of a hat; but I can’t say the same for Into Darkness.

I liked the orginal series and adored the first Reboot film but I’m worried that the writers are just going to once again throw out character development and logic for something cheap.

Make sure to wear sunglasses as im sure there will be triple the amount of lens flares as the first one.

And isnt Orci the pataQ who insulted all of fans for hating Into Darkness?

Pretty much. Tor had an article about it.
Not his finest moment.

@16 Someone should ask him what the reason is that other people get to DIRECT these films, and he doesn’t (until now, apparently).

It would be fair to say that the new movies are an attempt to interest or expand to a new audience, understandable for a tent-pole release and for a film studio with few prospects of that nature. Except that NuTrek has not been a very succesfull attempt – given the cost of the first reboot, and particularly given that STID did not even make as much money (adjusted for inflation and not even taking into account 3D or Imax viewings — or taking into account that the unadjusted amount is LESS than the additional production costs) as the 2009 reboot, NOR sold the amount of tickets that the earlier films had. The second film did a bit better than the first film in foreign markets, but no where near what it should have done (when compared, for example to anything else that can be considered a comparable genre film within the past 5-10 years, e.g. Captain America – The First Avenger to Captain America – the Winter Soldiar, as just one example).

World wide and in total, STID has made less money than Mission Impossible II or Terminator II – and they spent a great deal more money making it and marketing it. It does not even make the top 50 films in terms of gross, domestically or world-wide and its standing keeps dropping while newer films (Lego movie, as just one example) easily take it’s place.

There’s no expansion of any audience going on, and when you start to turn off the core audience, with reactions like these – which are mirrored elsewhere, the retooled film series will sink fast – very fast.

@5, It is worth noting that Roger Ebert thought the first ST (2009) was idiotic and he’s known for appreciating films for being what they want to be, provided they do it well. It’s not just the trekkies.

@11, Optimism was killed by young directors assigned to genre properties who want to make a “meaningful” genre film, “not like those others”, dark and grim, “realistic with real world consequences”, “relevant to today’s world”. I wish they’d assign a grown up to do the film.

I’m not against a reboot and was excited for the new movies…but the stupidity and plotholes were just too much. The first movie just didn’t make sense. Just summarizing the Plot makes me go WTF

A supernova in a distant solar system somehow surprises and destroys a faster than light civilization. Another FTL civilization somehow was not surprised and tried and failed to save them but can’t, so one of the people from the destroyed planet travels back in time and instead of warning his planet and saving them himself, tries to destroy all the people who tried and failed in the future.

Kirk goes from failed Cadet to Captain of the Flagship of the Fleet in 1 day. This happens after being tossed out of the ship, landing on an isolated planet/moon within walking distance of the cave where Old Spock was stranded. They both walk to Scotty who was all by himself in a Federation base within walking distance as well. They then use an interstellar transporter to return to the Enterprise, thereby making all starships obsolete but it will somehow never be used again….

Come on, its Science Fiction, not Stupid Fiction. It’s like they are trying to insult us or the target is audience is everyone who could not pass their GED

If only Star Trek had the kind of love for it’s 50th that Doctor Who got. (I know there are people who dislike the DW reboot but it is done with love and care, by fans.)

But instead ST gets one more (probably the last) dark and stupid movie made by people who only love money.

The 2 JJ films were abortions. They shouldn’t have even tired to tie them into the previous Star Trek universe in which the continuity was already tenuous at best. Just straight out say ‘Look, other than the names, this is an all new, re-imagined (if terribly ADHD re-imagined) Star Trek.’ If you like the old Star Trek stick to the books.
