The Game of Thrones season 5 trailer is here! HBO released it today; some audiences saw it over the weekend attached to the IMAX presentations of two season 4 episodes. Now everyone can enjoy all the fighting, intrigue, and mysterious idols being yanked off pyramids.
There looks to be major emphasis on the women of Westeros this season, with Littlefinger telling a teary Sansa Stark to “avenge them”; Daenerys proclaiming, “I’m not going to stop the wheel, I’m going to break the wheel”; our first look at the Sand Snakes (!); and Arya picking up her sword, Needle.
Not to mention an escaped Tyrion landing on a distant shore and plotting with Varys to put a proper ruler on the Iron Throne:
“The Seven Kingdoms needs a ruler loved by millions, with a powerful army and the right family name.”
“Good luck finding him.”
“Who said anything about him?”
AW YEAH DAENERYS. Best of all, it’s all set to a slowed-down cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes”:
Game of Thrones returns on April 12!
Well, Winds of Winter has officially been ruled out for 2015. And, I surmise, until October 2016. I don’t care what Gaiman says, that’s outrageous.
Game of Thrones Season 5 is going to have a lot of material not in the books and many, many retcons.
Is that a shark’s fin I see in the water?
Horrible line and you guys made it the title?
After the horrible changes in season 4 and the cutting of characters/storylines made obvious by the casting, I was pretty disappointed, but thought I would get hyped by the time the season was upon us…instead this trailer made me feel even worse…just proves that D&D are catering to the casuals way too much, those who only like the bewbs and wieners and khaleesi being badass and the witty dwarf…more Daenerys overhype and Tyrion whitewashing incoming
This thread got elitist fast. Do we really need that here?
Young Griff, we hardly knew you!
“….then I’m going to jump the shark!” – Daenerys Stormbore of the House Targaryen
Cool, looks like the new season will have lots of twists and turns. I look forward to them!
I’m on board with the wheel line being quite bad – I generally like Emilia Clarke, but when she does these kinds of proclamations (And they have her do them way too often), her acting is always so wooden, her tone absolutely flat. It’s supposed to be this badass line but it does nothing for me.
Also, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to watch Season 5 because I was expecting it to deviate from the books from TWOW onwards. I guess I shouldn’t have watched the trailer, now I know Griff isn’t a thing anymore…
I’m cautiously optomistic. They know more about the future of Westeros than we do, after all. Even if Winds isn’t finished there’s plenty of material Martin has written for it, and things he has planned, that he’s told them.
The show runners have gone on record saying they plan to end the series in season 7 or 8. So who knows, they may end up deviating from Martin’s plans and charting their own course, or not.
I wouldn’t be adverse to it. Plenty of television has done the same.
Isn’t that a harpy, which is the sigil of the Ghiscari?
Doesn’t look good. None of those scenes intrigued me.
No Griff, No Young Griff, No Ironborn heading East, No Prince of Dorne heading East, and no Lady Stoneheart(is Littlefinger preparing Sansa for that role?). Lots of filler cut out. HBO might be able to end it before Winds of winter is published in 2024.
Who’s funeral pyre is Melisandre putting a torch to? It better not be Jon Snow.
Quick, some expert… was the Mummer’s Dragon mentioned in the House of the Undying in the TV show? The lack of a Griff storyline might indicate something about that in the books…
anthonypero
No, the show did not include the Mummer’s Dragon at the end of season 2. Looks like a ton of fluff is going to get cut out of this season. Thank heavens.
Well, drat. That means he could still be a real (if irrelevant) Targaryen in the book.
Youtube removed the video as “spam”.
The HBO upload is at

So the tv show is indicating that most of the book that people waited 7 years for was mostly unimportant to the overall story.
Good to know.
