Scotty is beaming himself up: According to Deadline, Simon Pegg will co-write the Star Trek 3 script with Doug Jung (creator of TNT’s undercover cop series Dark Blue). They’ll be working with Fast & Furious’ Justin Lin, who recently replaced Roberto Orci as director.
This is the kind of news that makes perfect sense: Star Trek 3 will be well served to pull from its own ranks for a fresh take on the script. (Pegg also follows the tradition of Trek actors helming feature films, with Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, and Jonathan Frakes directing various movies.) And of course, Pegg co-wrote the entire Cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End) with Edgar Wright, as well as the TV series Spaced.
It’s unclear if Pegg and Jung will be working off one of the controversial pre-existing screenplays (please don’t bring back Vulcan, please no time travel) or if they’ll go an entirely new route. (Like more McCoy please?)
Star Trek 3 is set to be released on July 8, 2016.
This the first time I’ve heard something about Star Trek 3 that didn’t make me want to cry or bit my nails in worry.
Well… thats a tad refreshing… At least mr Tokyo Drift will have a half way decent script to work with.
At last they have a bona-fide Trekker involved in the project. It might improve the screen-play, but the damage has already been done.
Well I’m hoping they fall down a wormhole and their shuttle craft crashes in the South-West of England….and, pub?
Actually, joking aside this is the yet another piece of fabulous news and I’m a lot more confident about going to see this now than I was before. They are gradually scraping the Abrams off the franchise’s shoe.
I get that Pegg loves and will take care with the script, but I fear pop culture references. It’s worked in everything he’s done in the past, but it won’t work here. I know that I’m worrying for no good reason, still….
It’s certainly interesting and hopefully good news, given how much of a fan Pegg is, and how well versed he seems to be in Trek etc combined with his other works I can see him potentially be quite with this, I suspect any pop culture references will either be in universe, or appropriate.
I’ve got to get round to watching Spaced again (although I may need a new DVD set).
I initially read this as “Simon Pegg to write new Star Wars movie”, which wouldn’t be terribel either.
Calling it now. There WILL be a three breasted alien.
The only time travel I’d accept would be a Faithful adaptation of Ellison’s “City on the Edge of Forever”.
Just once in the Star Trek movies, I would love to see a small blue box go zipping past the Enterprise and the first officer exclaim, “What was that?”
