Guy Ritchie’s film adaptation of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. looks like it’s going to be two hours of stylish adventure! Rather than updating the classic television show’s setting to the 21st Century, Ritchie is reveling in the period details of the 1960s, and Henry Cavill seems charming as all get out as top American spy Napoleon Solo, and Armie Hammer’s Russian accent is fun! Will the film dabble in sci-fi, as the show occasionally did? Will Solo ever accept his partnership with Russian agent Illya Kuryakin? Will Hugh Grant’s mischievous twinkly eyes solve some sort of international kerfuffle? We’ll find out this August!
I had no idea that this was in the pipeline, catiously optimistic from the trailer, but you can never belive a trailer.
I was hoping they would do a Girl From UNCLE movie myself and give David McCallum’s Ilya Mr. Waverly’s job.
Funny, I remember when Armie Hammer joined it right before Lone Ranger came out, and there was a post or two talking about how he was the next “it” dude with these two big movies. Then Lone Ranger flopped, and there was nothing more about this movie at all so I thought it had never come together. Then, surprise, there’s a trailer and the movie exists after all. looks fun.
I did not like him as Superman, but he definitely has the charisma for this role going by what I see here. Guy Ritchie tends to have more hits than misses, I guess he’s due for another one.
I enjoyed (on the whole) Ritchie’s take on Sherlock Holmes so am quietly optimistic about this. Carvell seems to have Robert Vaughn’s smooth delivery down pat.
Now this looks like a “remake” that could actually be enjoyable. It appears to keep the spirit of the original, unlike so many movies that have gone to 60s-80s TV for “inspiration”.
This is wrong on so many levels! First off they say Illya is KGB and he NEVER was! Then they have Napoleon Solo as CIA?? What the hell happened to the actual U.N.C.L.E. organization?? I think they totally miss the mark for those of us who are deeply seeded in the original.
And really! No one could ever play Illya as well as David McCallum.
As an authentic remake it doesn’t look like it’s going to hit the mark. If you’re going to set it in the 1960’s why are you using contemporary music? If I do watch it, I’ll do so without expecting it to be Man from U.N.C.L.E. As an adventure movie, it doesn’t look half bad.
The Man From Uncle in a different universe: that is how I intend to enjoy this movie. I grew up watching the original show. I thought Solo was cool, but I was mad, crazy for Ilya. Half a century later, I am still enjoying David McCallum on N.C.I.S. He was, is, and will always be ‘my’ Ilya.
